Mushroom Fields Biome in Minecraft (Mushroom Island): How to Find It, Seeds, and Mob Spawning

Mooshrooms among giant red and brown mushrooms on mycelium-covered terrain in Minecraft’s Mushroom Fields biome.

To find a mushroom island in Minecraft, use /locate with cheats enabled, enter your seed in a seed map, or search deep ocean by boat.

The biome is officially called Mushroom Fields, but players also know it as Mushroom Island or the mushroom biome. These rare islands always sit far out in deep ocean.

Mooshrooms spawn naturally only in Mushroom Fields, one of the 66 biomes covered in our full Minecraft biome list.

At a Glance

  • Java:
    /locate biome minecraft:mushroom_fields
  • Bedrock:
    /locate biome minecraft:mushroom_island
  • No cheats? Use a seed map or explore deep oceans by boat.
  • Estimated to cover 0.14% of the Overworld’s surface in Java Edition.

How to Find a Mushroom Island

Use /locate for the fastest search, a seed map to avoid cheats, or a boat to explore.

Use /locate and Teleport

With cheats on, use your edition’s command to find the nearest mushroom island:

  • Java: /locate biome minecraft:mushroom_fields
  • Bedrock: /locate biome minecraft:mushroom_island

⚠️ Bedrock Note: Turning on cheats permanently disables achievements in that world. Use a seed map instead if achievements matter to you.

  1. Turn on cheats. In Java 26.3, open World Options from the pause menu, then enable Allow Commands under General. In Bedrock, enable Activate Cheats in world settings. On servers and Realms, you’ll need operator permission.
  2. Run the command. Use your edition’s /locate command above in the Overworld, then note the X and Z coordinates. In Java, clicking the coordinates prepares a teleport that may leave you underground or in midair. Use step 3 for a surface landing.
  3. Teleport to the surface (optional). Replace X and Z in your edition’s command below with the coordinates you found:
    • Java: /spreadplayers X Z 0 1 false @s
    • Bedrock: /spreadplayers X Z 0 1 @s

Java’s /locate searches about 6,400 blocks in each direction. If your search fails, check these common problems and fixes.

Use a Seed Map

Use Chunkbase’s Biome Finder to find mushroom islands without cheats.

  1. Get your seed. In Java, type /seed in chat (no cheats needed in singleplayer). In Bedrock, check your world settings under Game. On servers or Realms, ask the owner.
  2. Open Chunkbase’s Biome Finder. Enter your seed, select your edition and the version that generated the area, and choose Overworld.
  3. Highlight Mushroom Fields. Select it from the Highlight Biomes menu below the map.
  4. Note the nearest island’s coordinates. Click the nearest mushroom island and note its X and Z coordinates.
  5. Travel there. Travel to those coordinates. In Java, press F3 to view your coordinates. In Bedrock, enable Show Coordinates in world settings.

Search Deep Oceans by Boat

Search for mushroom islands in deep oceans far from the mainland. Here’s what to bring and look for:

  • Pack before you leave. Jot down your starting coordinates, grab plenty of food, and take a chest boat for storage.
  • Stay over deep ocean. Any temperature counts, even frozen. In Java, check the biome display for a deep ocean variant. If it isn’t shown, press F3 + F6 and enable it in Debug Options.
  • Look for mushroom islands. Look for purple-gray ground and huge red and brown mushrooms on the horizon. You may also spot mooshrooms as you get closer.
  • Check nearby after finding one. Mushroom islands sometimes show up in groups, so look around before heading home.

Want an even bigger island? In Java, use seed 30659253703 with the Large Biomes world type. Its mushroom island is about 13,000 blocks across and covers the world center at (0, 0).

Want a whole world of it? In Java, select the Single Biome world type and choose Mushroom Fields. Your entire Overworld becomes that biome, while the Nether and End stay unchanged.

How Rare Is a Mushroom Island?

A community study puts Mushroom Fields at about 0.14% of Java’s Overworld surface (1 in ~700 blocks), the third-rarest surface biome.

Islands sit far out in deep ocean where few players go, so it feels rarer. Bedrock wasn’t measured.

What You’ll Find on a Mushroom Island

Mushroom islands offer unique blocks, outdoor mushroom farming, and an unlimited food supply from mooshrooms.

Terrain. Islands range from a few blocks to thousands long, and most are flat with small hills. Expect purple-gray mycelium, huge red and brown mushrooms, and some sugar cane by the shore. Water color also differs between Java and Bedrock, as shown below.

Mooshrooms. Red mooshrooms are the only land animals that spawn here. Use a bowl for unlimited mushroom stew or a bucket for milk.

Lightning within 4 blocks switches mooshrooms between red and brown. Two red mooshrooms have a 1-in-1,024 chance of producing a brown calf. Shearing either type permanently turns it into a regular cow.

Other mobs. Bats spawn in caves in both editions, and glow squid spawn in dark underground water.

Structures. Mineshafts, dungeons, and trial chambers can generate below the island, with shipwrecks and ocean ruins in the water around it. Villages don’t generate naturally here.

Do Hostile Mobs Spawn in Mushroom Fields?

Regular hostile mobs don’t spawn naturally in Mushroom Fields, even in caves and mineshafts within the biome. However, mobs can still appear through spawners, special events, or nearby biomes.

Is a Mushroom Island Good for a Base?

Mushroom islands suit bases: hostile mobs don’t spawn naturally there, even in its caves. The downside: they’re far offshore, with no trees, villages, or farm animals but mooshrooms.

Pros

  • Safer building: Fewer hostile mob spawns around your base.
  • Unlimited food: Get mushroom stew from mooshrooms anytime.
  • Unique materials: Build with mycelium and mushroom blocks.
  • Plenty of space: Larger islands have room for homes, farms, and more.

Cons

  • Remote location: Expect long trips to gather supplies from the mainland.
  • Limited resources: Bring saplings, most farm animals, and building supplies.
  • No villages: Bring villagers to your island for trading.
  • Mob risks: Spawners, raids, and mobs from nearby biomes still pose a threat.

💡 Tip: In Java, sleep regularly to prevent phantoms. In either edition, light up Lush Caves: the only cave biome below the island, and mobs spawn in it.

Mushroom Island Build Ideas

Mushroom House. Turn a huge red mushroom into a home with windows and storage. Connect nearby mushroom homes with wooden bridges.

Mooshroom Village. Build cottages around a central crop field, with fenced pastures for mooshrooms. Breed villagers to grow your village and add a trading area.

Coastal Mushroom Castle. Build a stone castle overlooking the ocean, with mushroom-block accents, towers, and a harbor.

For extra color, place grass blocks around your builds. They’ll turn bright green, similar to jungle grass.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Mushroom Fields the same as Mushroom Island?

Yes. Mushroom Fields is the official name of one of Minecraft’s biomes, but players commonly call it Mushroom Island.

What happened to Mushroom Field Shore?

Mushroom Field Shore was a separate shoreline biome that stopped generating in Minecraft 1.18. Java removed it as a separate biome, but Bedrock kept its legacy biome ID for older worlds.

Can you start on a mushroom island?

Not normally. Minecraft usually places your starting spawn outside Mushroom Fields, even if an island is at (0, 0). You can find a seed with an island near spawn or set your respawn point there with a bed.

How do you collect mycelium?

Mine mycelium with a Silk Touch tool. Without Silk Touch, it drops dirt instead. Once collected, place it next to dirt; it spreads with light level 9+ above it.

Can you take mooshrooms off a mushroom island?

Yes. Lure them with wheat, use a lead, or carry them by boat. They’ll stay mooshrooms outside Mushroom Fields, and you can breed them there.
